If you’re fed up with your daily routine and need to inject some light into your soul, then why not take a long weekend in Amsterdam. This ancient city with its canals, cafes and art is ideal for a short break.

Plan your trip around the city’s festivals

Amsterdam is a city of festivals, whichever month of the year you select for your break, there’s sure to be something going on in the city. For example, if you are thinking of taking your break in the winter, you could time your trip to coincide with International Fashion Week.

The city also hosts a ‘Realisme Art Fair during the same month when the passenger terminal of the city Central Station is turned into a giant exhibition space.

Amsterdam after dark

You don’t have to be an art lover to enjoy this wonderful city; it does help, though. Amsterdam has a thriving nightlife, based around several locations. Make your way over to the Jordaan area if you want to party with the locals. This district is popular during the day, thanks to its markets and its beauty and at night the Jordaan becomes a magnet for those who enjoy a stroll along the banks of the canals as well as those who wish to explore its thriving nightclubs.

For some of the best clubs in town, head off to the Rembrandtplein, if you’ve always wanted to dance in a church, the Paradiso is situated in a converted place of worship on Weteringschans.

Amsterdam canals

Amsterdam is a perfect city for just strolling about. You can select one of the many city cruises and marvel at the beautiful architecture as you drift down the waterway. If you’re really jaded then, try a night time cruise, complete with cheese and wine, that starts from Prins Hendrikkade, this experience will soon revive your spirits.

The whole of Amsterdam’s canal ring was designated as a UNESCO world heritage site in 2010 in recognition of its beauty. If you don’t like the idea of an organised cruise then why not club together with some friends and hire a boat yourselves?

If you’re a first time visitor, the canals are a great introduction to the city.

Amsterdam will revive your spirits

You won’t cover the entire city’s numerous attractions over the course of a long weekend but remember, you can always return in the future!
