If there is one thing that you can be guaranteed about in almost any major city in Europe it’s that somewhere, at some stage, you’ll stumble across an Irish pub.  The friendly atmosphere, traditional music and endless laughs make them a popular hangout for locals and tourists alike.  They are often a good starting point for English speaking folk to find their bearings in a new city, and a place for locals to relax with friends and even spark up some new friendships over a pint.  Like most European cities Prague is no stranger to some great Irish pubs.  If you’re planning a city break to Prague this autumn / winter, here’s 5 Irish pubs you’ll need to get yourself along to.

Rocky O’Reilly’s

Wenceslas Square is perhaps the most popular areas in the whole of Prague with millions of tourists flocking here each year.  Among the most popular bars in the square is Rocky O’Reilly’s, considered by many as the best Irish bar in Prague.  With friendly staff, traditional pub grub and beers like Guinness, Murphy’s, Fosters and Heineken flowing, as well as Magners Cider, get ready to rock when you visit Rocky O’Reilly’s.  Tourists and backpackers tend to be the order of the day here, but there’s always a friendly crowd in no matter when you visit.

J.J. Murphy’s

Located in Prague’s Little Quarter, J.J Murphy’s has that look and feel of all traditional Irish bars.  Wooden interior and the smell of a full Irish fry, it’s as if you’ve never left Dublin when you’re sitting in Murphy’s.  You can catch up on live sports and enjoy the craic with the locals and other tourists who flock to Murphy’s at the weekend.

Address – Trziste 4, Prague 1

O’Che’s

Another popular Irish hangout in the Little Quarter is O’Che’s, an Irish bar with a bit of an Irish / Czech feel to the name.  As you would expect, the decor is mainly wooden furniture but there is a real homely feel to this bar.  A little bit quieter than Rocky O’Reilly’s you can still expect to find the odd large group enjoying a feed and a pint before getting ready to sing the night away.

Address – Liliova 14, Prague 1

James Joyce

Named after famous Irish novelist and poet James Joyce, this bar has made a return to Prague in 2009 having served its first pint of Guinness back in 1993.  The team haven’t looked back and if you want a bar that epitomises a typical Irish country pub then this is it.  James Joyce is an intimate venue that more than makes up for its lack of size by serving some of the best Guinness in the city.  Great food and regular music is also part of the furniture at James Joyce.

Address – U Obecního Dvora 4, Prague 1

Caffrey’s

Last on our list is the popular old town bar of Caffrey’s, who sport the slogan “your friend in Prague”.  One thing you can rest assured with Caffrey’s is that you’ll certainly feel like you have lots of friends in Prague as the bar staff and customers are only too welcome to make you feel right at home.  Live music, drinks promotions, great food and off course plenty of Irish stout – sure what else would you need!
